Star News predicts strong growth for the coastal NC area

New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties will experience "robust" growth in the next 12 months, growing 9 percent, said William Hall Jr., senior economist at UNCW .
Hall's analysis is based on retail trade and tourism continuing to grow at a healthy rate. And while down from the previous year, growth will continue to be a positive factor in the local economy.
This is the 20th year that Hall has made forecasts of the area's economy. Wednesday, he did it without his long-time associate, Claude Farrell. Farrell, also an economist at the business school, has begun phased retirement.
The lure of the beach means more growth is coming.

There are few places in the Cape Fear region where the area's past and future sit more cheek and jowl than downtown Wilmington.
From the homes in the city's Historic District to the steel-and-glass PPD tower going up a few blocks away on the city's Northside, a trip through downtown is a visual smorgasbord of the region's changing economic and cultural faces.
Yet the very factor that drew the first Europeans, and continues to lure the latest transplants to the Port City, remains. The water.
Old railroad tracks and brick warehouses hark back to an era when the Cape Fear River was the city's primary economic engine, connecting Wilmington and its markets to the outside world.
Swanky new condominium projects, plans for marinas and a new convention center show the river's continuing pull, but this time as a recreational and visual draw.

Nestled between the Cape Fear River and North Carolina's Inner Bank beaches, Wilmington has great golf, mild weather, natural beauty, and a relatively cheap cost of living, all of which make it popular with both permanent residents and second-home vacationers.
As the only city of any significant size on the North Carolina coast, Wilmington may be just at the beginning of its boom. It has a seaport, an international airport, and a UNC campus. But it has also maintained its "historic" ambiance, bringing it another revenue stream: Hollywood has filmed 180 features here during the past two decades.
